We're hardwired to look for patterns, repetition and rhythms. This is why the firsts enchant us – the first early spring flowers, the first snow in fall/winter, the migration of birds. The patterns in nature give us something to hang onto. Our own lives are also infused with rhythms and patterns - from our routines and daily activities to traditions and holidays we celebrate.

Paying attention to the rhythms of our lives as intertwined with nature satisfies a deep-rooted hunger and provides comfort that cannot be found elsewhere. The more we pay attention, the more we see that the extra ordinary really is the extraordinary.

Modern Field Journaling simply records it all.

Friday Phenology 4 May 2012

This week didn’t see me outside a whole lot as I had many deadlines to meet (or shift) that meant I was sitting here at the computer for a larger chunk of time than normal, but even busy, I managed to make a few observations. WITL Monday

WITL Monday

Computer issues ate the work I had done on Sunday – the day we traveled back home again, so I’ll have to rework it at some point, but when that happens, I stop because I keep trying to recreate what was instead of just creating new. Friday Phenology 27 April 2012

This is the weekend – for those of us who live in the mountains, it’s as lovely and wonderful as the peak weekend for watching the aspens turn in the fall. But since it’s not the same each year, depending on weather and such, it’s really almost a locals only affair. But if you’re around, this is the weekend to head to the hills to see all the brand new tiny leaves on… Read more...
